I do not know whether UCL’s dorms on Caledonian Road deserve the award, as I have not been there. (For UCL’s defense, click here.) However, I do know that student housing across the world tends to be pretty ugly.
Making things better can be complicated—universities in metropolitan centers often find it difficult to expand and blend with the city. Just ask Columbia and NYU.
Yet, there are examples of excellent university buildings and accommodation. A recent example is the University of Limerick’s Medical School, which just won the Stirling Prize.
